Health data is used far beyond the consultation that produced it, for audit, research, dashboards and improvement. Under the UK GDPR personal data must be accurate and kept up to date, so entering it well is a legal duty on the controller as well as a professional duty on you.
It teaches the main sources and stores of health data and how their purpose limits what they can tell you. It also covers accurate entry in a standard form, and storage, retention and the storage limitation principle. It shows how to tell research from clinical audit and service evaluation and the approvals each needs, including research safeguards in Chapter 8A of the UK GDPR, in force since 5 February 2026. It explains why pseudonymised data is still personal data to anyone who can reverse it, how to record provenance, what information governance requires when data crosses organisations, and what dashboards achieve.
