Written by Rob Menzies MSc FFPM RCPS (Glasg)
Podiatrist, The Foot in Diabetes
The phrase diabetic foot ulcer covers a superficial neuropathic graze and a limb-threatening ischaemic, infected wound. The difference lives entirely in the description, and the quality of that first description shapes the urgency, the referral and the audit record. Because ulcers recur, most patients are described many times, so a team that classifies the same way builds a record that speeds every future episode.
The module teaches the domains you are recording: site, area, depth, ischaemia, infection and neuropathy. It shows why depth matters most, with wounds probing to bone more than eleven times as likely to lead to a midfoot or higher amputation in the University of Texas cohort. It teaches reproducible area measurement with photographs and planimetry, and the four-week area reduction as a healing predictor. It explains why the component variables, not a bare score, should travel with the patient, and appraises machine-learning prognostic models.
Content is tiered at Foundation, Core and Advanced level, with two algorithms and case vignettes. You receive the Teaching Document, the Evidence Base, the slide deck, a narrated video and an audio overview.
